Common Troubleshooting Tips for Resistors Failure
Over time, the use of resistors may prevent certain problems from arising, such as noise and looseness when in use, as well as jittering of the pointer. The problems that arise at different times of use are also different. This article introduces some troubleshooting techniques for common problems that arise with resistors.
(1) Let's start by examining the appearance of the thermistor. The potentiometer or thermistor must have clear markings, rust-free solder pads or leads, a smooth-turning axis, appropriate tension, a smooth feel when turned, and no mechanical noises or vibrations.
(2) Gently shaking the potentiometer terminal or the heat-sensitive resistor leads by hand should not result in any loose connections.
(3) Set the multimeter to the appropriate range for resistance, then perform the ohmmeter zero adjustment. Finally, use both probes (without distinguishing positive and negative) to touch the two ends of the resistor's terminals. This will allow us to measure the actual resistance value. Compare the test value with the resistor's marked value to accurately determine whether the potentiometer or thermistor is functioning properly. If the multimeter's pointer does not move, it indicates that the internal resistance element has broken.
(4) The center terminal of a potentiometer or thermistor is always connected to the internal sliding contact. We use the two probes of a multimeter to connect to the center terminal and any other terminal, then slowly rotate the knob. The meter pointer should move smoothly in response. If the pointer jumps or drops, it means that the sliding contact and the resistance element are poorly contacted.
